Tim's Talking about Background Checks, the Beach Boys, Workplace Safety and Social Security

Check Your Checker

The biggest problem with background checks is not in finding a supplier...there are hundreds of them out there. The bigger issue has to do with their accuracy. According to TalentWise the error margin can be as high as 41%.

The reason for this is the large number of  county courthouses (3000+) and the fact that they are not centralized, have unique ways of data sharing and believe it or do not have their the databases available online.

If you need help in selecting a provider you can visit BestBackgroundChecks.com for a detailed directory.

I GET AROUND...

That's what Brian Huff, Controller, The City of Kent will be humming along at Blossom Music Center on June 13th as last month's winner of our Beach Boys giveaway. It was tough going picking a favorite tune but Kokomo, I Get Around and Good Vibrations were the favorites picked.

Winners of Pet Sounds CD's include:
  • Mary Jane Hannah, HR, Kent State University
  • Joanne Sharp, HR Coordinator, Infocision
  • Tammy Langford, Manager, Mill Pak-Ohio Gasket & Shim
  • Dale Gresko, Classified Advertising Manager, Vindicator
  • Renee Jones, HR Manager, Rhiel Supply

This month we are moving back to the Battle of Ohio by offering chances to win tickets to the Indians versus Cincinnati Reds series that start on June 20 at Progressive Field. Opening this month's e-letter automatically  has you entered.

THINK TWICE BEFORE ENDING A TEMP THAT GETS HURT

"No employer shall discharge, demote, reassign, or take any punitive action against any employee because the employee filed a claim or instituted, pursued or testified in any proceedings under the worker's compensation act for an injury or occupational disease which occurred in the course of and arising out of his employment with that employer".

These are the words from Ohio Revised Code Section 4123.90 and co-employment issues being what they are could land you in trouble (along with your staffing provider) if you end the assignment of a temporary worker at your facility because of an industrial injury.

The best result for all concerned is to get the injured worker back to work as quickly as possible to avoid the costs of litigation. Of course if there are other issues involved that justify the assignment being ended such as the intentional violation of safety rules things change.

SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT STATEMENTS MAILED NO MORE

If you are like me and enjoyed getting that statement in the mail every year from the Social Security Administration that shows how little you'll be getting if you even make it to the retirement goal line that keeps getting farther away it just got a bit harder.

It seems they will be available only by going on their website and downloading them via the internet. I went through the process and believe me it involves many security steps including passwords, security questions and so forth but they did make it.

So, if you want to see your benefits visit www.ssa.gov and register on-line.

Good Luck!
